About Alonnisos Marine Park (National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades)

Established in 1992, the National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades is located in the northern part of the Sporades archipelago in the Aegean Sea. Covering both marine and terrestrial areas, the park spans several islands including Alonnisos, Peristera, and parts of Skopelos, as well as extensive marine zones. It was created primarily to protect the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, one of the rarest seal species in the world, alongside an array of marine life such as dolphins, sea turtles, and diverse fish species. The park's clear blue waters, rich seagrass beds, and rocky seabeds create diverse ecosystems ideal for snorkeling, diving, and wildlife observation. Terrestrially, the park features dense pine forests, limestone cliffs, and traditional villages, with hiking paths that reveal panoramic views of the Aegean. Visitors can explore underwater caves and the marine fauna, or experience cultural and historical sites including Venetian castles and monasteries. The park is managed with conservation regulations to minimize human impact, allowing visitors to engage sustainably in activities like boat tours, kayaking, and eco-friendly diving. Its remote location and protected status provide a serene environment for nature lovers, marine biologists, and adventure seekers. The balance of scientific research, traditional livelihood, and ecotourism makes the park a model for marine protection in Europe.
